Glen’s Art Intro

With Glen recently committing to make the art for Slapshot Showdown, I wanted to show some appreciation and introduce him to you all.

Glen’s a friend, DnD party member, and local tattoo artist in NJ. His work can be found over on his personal instagram: here.

The first piece he did for the game is this sick monochromatic ink drawing for The Monster. The Monster is Dr. Prometheus’s undead goon, and was one of the earliest concepts I had for the game. I loved the idea of a Frankenstein inspired duo of hockey players. Glen decided to go with a black and white monochromatic aesthetic for the game, and I loved it. The black and white ink drawings call back wonderfully to classic horror comics, like Eerie or Creepy magazine, and it’s a tone that totally fits the game! I couldn’t be more pumped to have an awesome aesthetic that will be present throughout the whole game. Consistency is important to me, which led me to want to work with only a single artist pretty early on. If all goes well, Glen will be that artist!

After seeing how awesome the black and white looked, it made me think a bit on my card frame and previous aesthetic choices. The card frame had some classic fantasy scrollwork borders and had some nice beige/brown tones going on. However, it looks much better as a black and white frame with this new art in mind. I messed about for a handful of hours, trying different tones and shading processes. I tried an “antique photo” look. I arrived tentatively at something like this for a proof of concept: this will be familiar if you’ve seen the game’s Instagram posts. (And this is by no means finalized).

Overall, I think the black and white gives the game a very “classic horror” feel, and love the direction these mock ups are going in right now. I’ll break down all the stats and game mechanic stuff later, since this is an art post about Glen and what he brings to the game.
