What is Slapshot Showdown?

Slapshot Showdown is an upcoming fantasy hockey miniature game, where you take on the role of coach of your own hockey team. Jump into the fantasy world of Rinkhaven, where hockey is a violent and integral part of life. The league of Rinkhaven has no penalties, and the crowds gather to watch teams of monsters - like werewolves, vampires, the undead, and cryptids - play against the humanoid denizens of Rinkhaven,- like elves, dwarves, gnomes, and humans!

Handpick all the players for your team, and put your strategy to the test! You can put together a team of fast and skilled players to win the old fashioned way by outscoring your opponent, or you can build a team on monsters and bullies to crush your opponents into the boards, forcing them to forfeit after enough of them lose consciousness.

Slapshot Showdown’s gameplay is designed to be both fast paced and strategic, with much of the depth being placed in the team building portion of the game that happens before your players ever touch the ice. Look for synergies between players, or ways to compensate for superstars that are only good at one thing. Slapshot Showdown will support a league structure where you can even fantasy draft players with your friends, and play seasons, in addition to being able to simply play pick-up scrimmages.

Slapshot Showdown uses six sided dice, or D6s, to resolve gameplay quickly, with a very simple failure/success result system, much like what is found in similar games. A result of a 1, 2, or 3 on a die is often a failure; and a result of a 4, 5, or 6 is typically a success. When you are required to roll dice, the number of dice is determined by a stat on the player card for the miniature, and often is related to the type of check you’re performing. For example, a roll to dodge damage will normally use the player’s Skate stat, while a roll to deal damage will often use the player’s Strength stat. Using The Monster’s player stat card, you can see he has a Skate value of 1, meaning he would roll 1d6 to determine success on dodging. That probably seems very bad, and for the most part it is - however, his Strength value is equal to half his remaining Endurance, meaning he rolls a whopping 7d6 to deal damage while he is at full Endurance!

Unlike some other games, your basic game actions related to hockey will often not require dice rolls to see if they succeed. For example, you don’t need to succeed on any sort of roll to Shoot or Pass the puck. Your players are among the best in all of Rinkhaven, and simple things like that are easy for them.

Movement is quick and the game uses hexes to make it even easier. No need to measure out inches. The same is true of Ability, Pass and Shot ranges- those are handled by 3 simple template sizes- Short, Medium, and Long. Simply grab a template and hold it next to your player to look at the range, no counting required.

All these design ideas and principles come from a desire to make the game simple and snappy, and to try to make sure the hard and time consuming part of Slapshot Showdown is in the strategy, and not in playing the game itself.
